Dearne Valley College (DVC) can trace its origins back to the Mechanics Institute in Wath. It first became a college of Further Education in 1976 when Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) established the Rockingham College of Further Education.

It was renamed Dearne Valley College in September 1996 when a new £7.5 million development was opened on the site of the former Manvers colliery.
